The Unit of Foreign Languages is an autonomous Scientific Unit of Section B “Curricula and Educational Material” of the Scientific Department of IEP (Law 3966/2011, article 13, as amended by Law 4763/2020, article 96, following Decision No. 59/22-12-2020 of the Board of Directors of IEP.
The Unit advises and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors of IEP on all issues concerning the school subjects of foreign languages (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish) taught in primary and secondary education, general and vocational.
In particular, it delivers expert opinion on issues concerning the formulation, modernisation and optimal implementation of foreign language educational policy, with emphasis on timetables, curricula, educational material, textbooks and learning resources as well as teaching guidelines, subject syllabus and assessment criteria and assignment of subjects to teachers.
The Unit also makes recommendations regarding the conduct of research in primary and secondary schools, the approval of Foreign Language Teaching Programs of Universities aimed at granting teaching proficiency in private foreign language centres and responses to parliamentary scrutiny as well as questions/requests by individuals, teachers’ associations and other organizations.
The Unit collaborates with other Units and Sections of the Scientific Department of IEP on issues within its competence and participates in scientific project groups, committees and working groups formed for a specific purpose and time.
The Unit may undertake initiatives for the design, development, renewal and enrichment of curricula and educational materials for foreign language subjects. Its responsibilities include conducting research, drafting studies, participating in European and research programs, organising training activities, such as workshops, seminars and conferences, with the agreement of the Board of Directors of IEP. The unit can also collaborate with teachers, Educational Advisors and other education bodies, at national, European and international level, in accordance with the legal framework governing the operation of IEP.
